It Takes a Village

Most of us have heard the proverb “It Takes A Village.”  For many of us, it can have different meanings.  The original proverb has African roots, possibly originating from the Nigerian Igbo culture and proverb Oran a azu nwa.  At its core is the understanding that a community’s collective involvement is needed to achieve certain goals or tasks.

For example, look at the Community it takes to produce a show like the Wood Art Expo - It could never happen without a group of dedicated volunteers, entry participants, vendors, and those who come to see the show.  All those things are needed to make the event successful, and this is considered a community.

It can also be as grand as a community coming together after a natural disaster, such as we experienced locally here in 2022 after Hurricane Ian. Individuals worked alone and in organized groups, and as a broader Community came together to help each other with recovery.  Community resonates with the idea that “many hands make light work” and is the result when a community comes together in a shared effort.

With this in mind, the board has decided to change the Floater Competition that had minimal participation for the past two years, and institute instead an Annual Display Theme.  This years’ theme will be a "Miniature Village".  This 2024 Theme was conceived from both Curtis Hutchens’ outhouse and cabin cutouts and North Port Woodcarvers’ similar display. We have included some pictures from the North Port Woodcarvers display as an example.

The idea is to create a carving or woodturning that fits into the Theme of a Miniature Village.  Entries should be confined to a footprint no larger than 10x10x10 inches square.  And YES, your entry MAY be part of the main Competition, and can then be moved to the Miniature Village Display after judging.
Please include a note on your entry form or let one of the staff know if you wish your Competition Entry to be displayed in the Miniature Village after judging is completed.  After judging, Staff Volunteers will move your piece to the Theme Display along with any ribbons awarded.

Please note: It is NOT required to enter your Village piece in the main competition, and there is NO Entry Fee if your piece is designated only for the Miniature Village. Please bring your Miniature Village Display pieces in on drop-off day, Thursday January 11th. The village is not a competition, is open to any skill level, and is meant to be a collaboration with all the Woodcarvers and Woodturners.

Have fun, and we can’t wait to see how the village will grow!
